A day of service; the campaign heads to skid row
Dec 5th, 2009 by Pete
I have been serving at the Union Rescue Mission for several years. Today, members of our campaign went downtown to serve breakfast and prepare lunch. This particular visit was a bit different than those of the past. Typically we serve hundreds of homeless and out of work men. Today that was no different, but today we saw not only dozens of woman, but dozens of families with children. Mom, Dad, and the kids. It reminds us how tenuous life is for all of us. As I have been spending time throughout the District, I have spoken with so many people and familes who are either out of work, or worried about being let go. In robust times, and in these uncertain times, these families are just a paycheck or two from being in the same situation. Let us come together during this Holiday season and help those who may be less fortunate than us. Let us also band together to change this nation. Not the current change towards socialism, but change to a stronger economy by lowering taxes and getting the government off the backs of families and businesses. Let us change by not inhibiting donations, but strengthening our drive as a people to help others. Let us change our attitude by not looking down on the less fortunate and giving them a handout, but by giving them a hand up, restoring their pride and will to succeed. Helping them learn the skills to once again be a productive part of our society. Even with all of our challenges, we are the most prosperous nation in the world and we should not contiue the politics of class warfare, but join together to be a greater nation as “a rising tide raises all ships”.
