Comment on Last year, I learned about HR 25-The FairTax bill and really feel that it could change our country for the better in so many ways. Our tax code is incredibly complicated-more so than it needs to be-and stifles the economy. The FairTax is just that-fair. Would you support the bill? by brisprad

Thanks for your response Pete. If I may, I wanted to clear something up about the FairTax-how it would actually help those living under the poverty level now. Most people start out learning about the FairTax as just a consumption tax rather than an income tax. There is a provision referred to as a prebate. According to FairTax.org:

"Under the FairTax, all Americans consume what they see as their necessities of life free of tax. While permitting no exemptions, the FairTax (HR 25) provides a monthly universal prebate to ensure that each family unit can consume tax free at or beyond the poverty level, with the overall effect of making the FairTax progressive in application."

For a single person, the prebate would be about $200 a month; for my family of 4, about $340. Most people who really understand the FairTax actually say it would help those below the poverty more than our current system. Yes, the items people buy would include a consumption tax. However, the tax is inclusive, not added on top the purchase price. I personally love the idea as a way to help add money to savings.

I do feel a flat tax would be better than our current system, but not as good as the FairTax for one huge reason-tax evasion. People could still be creative as what they claim as their income (especially income outside their regular job) just so they wouldn't pay as much in taxes. Under the FairTax, that is not a problem.

Thanks again for your time.

Sincerely,
Brian in Lomita
